California CCW Application Checklist

County staff don't reject strong applicants often — they reject incomplete files constantly. Every kicked-back application re-enters the queue at the back. This checklist exists so you file exactly once.

Core Documents

• Government-issued photo ID (driver's license or state ID)
• Proof of residency in the county — utility bill, lease, or deed (bring two; counties differ)
• Completed state application — answered fully and truthfully; omissions are disqualifying
• 16-hour training certificate from a course acceptable to your county (book yours)
• Fee payment per your county's schedule — amounts in our cost guide

Firearm Information

For each handgun you want on the license: make, model, serial number, and caliber — and you must qualify with each one at training. Listing a firearm you don't yet own? Most counties require possession before it goes on the permit; you can usually add firearms later by amendment.

County-Specific Items

Depending on your issuing agency, expect some of: character references with contact information, spouse/cohabitant notification forms, employment verification (for work-based applications), and a psychological evaluation appointment. Check your county portal the week you file — forms change.

Mistakes That Kick Back Files

• Residency documents that don't match the application address
• Undisclosed arrests or cases — even old, dismissed, or expunged ones the county can see
• Certificate from a non-compliant or wrong-length course
• Serial numbers transcribed wrong (photograph the slide/frame instead of copying by hand)
