Los Angeles County processes more CCW applications than anywhere else in California — and its queues show it. The one part of the process you fully control is training, and getting it right the first time matters more here than in any other county: a rejected certificate doesn't just cost money, it sends you to the back of a line measured in months.
Most county residents apply through the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (LASD); residents of the City of Los Angeles and certain cities with their own police departments may apply through their city agency instead. Expect an online application, document intake, an interview, Live Scan fingerprinting, and a wait that varies with the department's backlog. We confirm the correct issuing agency for every student on day one — applying to the wrong one is a common, expensive mistake.
PG-13 CCW Training Academy has operated from Van Nuys since 1992. The 16-hour initial course covers everything the state mandates — safety, handling, mental readiness, and California use-of-force law — and our live-fire qualification runs the same course of fire LA County agencies expect, with every handgun going on your permit. Renewing instead? The 8-hour renewal course runs weekly.
